The blogger quoted below found a post on Craigslist that explains the insanity of doing spec work better than anything I can say. The original author is unknown, but beautifully sets out the argument regarding why artists need to stop accepting work in exchange for "experience" and "exposure". Sadly, Craigslist is not the only source of such dubious "opportunities". The web link is at the bottom if you want to read all the follow-up comments to the blog post. Thank you Rebecca. And all you artists out there print this off and read it if ever you are tempted to work on spec.

I’m a self-employed graphic designer. In the old days, when I was greener than a leprechaun’s testicles, nothing would make me consider suicide quicker than a potential client who was, in fact, just some deluded jackass. The hook was usually, “If you do this job cheap, I’ve loads more work for you!” and I bought that line more times than anyone with an ounce of sense ought to have.

This morning, the following was posted on CraigsList. It’s been doing the rounds on design boards and blogs in a big community whoop because it captures and excoriates so perfectly the ignorance and arrogance inflicted on designers by design morons.

The post was quickly flagged and removed (i.e. censored) by CraigsList users, but not before it became the gift that keeps on giving. Who was that masked crusader? Designers everywhere owe him a hot coffee and a big hug:

Every day, there are more and more Craiglist posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on Craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?
If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;
1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?
If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit www.no-spec.com.
So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

The Story:

My name is Daarken and I am a concept artist and illustrator working for Mythic Entertainment. My friend Leif Jeffers, an animator at DreamWorks, and I are organizing an art auction fundraiser.

Earlier this year my girlfriend, Cat, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25. On November 3rd, 2009, she had a bilateral mastectomy after going through 16 weeks of chemotherapy. As you can imagine it has been hard for her, not only mentally and physically, but financially. In order to help alleviate some of her medical bills Leif and I wanted to throw an art auction. The proceeds that are left over after her medical bills have been paid will go to a breast cancer related charity to be determined by the artists in the coming weeks.

We currently have artists contributing that hail from all regions of the industry: concept artists, animators, photographers, sculptors, fine artists, illustrators, you name it. The theme for the auction is "Beautiful Grim." The interpretation of "Beautiful Grim" has been left up to the artists.

I found this years spectrum annual has changed vastly compared to the previous years. The book itself is a lot larger, featuring a lot more artist as well as a better variety and selection of works. It has been an honor to be published into this book!

Last year had been a roller coaster ride for my career. I finished school, worked at a startup company but soon realized I really wanted to do things on my own and to my own schedule. My art was been put on hold for the last 8 months but I promise 2010 will be a year of change and hopefully grand opprotunities! I'm offically working as a freelance illustrator and the journey has been rough so far but I know it could only get better.

Zocalo Coffeehouse

In the past few months I've been working on a coffee sleeve for Zocalo Coffeehouse. It's been a pleasure to work with Tim Holmes and to come up with a product that fits his coffeehouse and his brand. The text may change a bit but the overall final sleeve will have the same look and feel. Hopefully I'll be able to get some shots of the printed sleeves on a cup.

Zocalo Coffeehouse is an independent, locally-owned coffeehouse and roastery, located in San Leandro, California. The name, a Mexican-Spanish word meaning “town square” or “town center,” was chosen to reflect the goal of community building, focusing not only on the product, but on the place itself. It’s not just about coffee or tea, it’s about the community.

Make sure you drop by if you are in the area, the Coffeehouse looks amazing.

It was my pleasure to show and to attend Black Maria gallery. Thank you Melanie, Zara, Beau and many others for making this show happen. The evening was filled with excitement for the first black and white show of the Kids are Alright tour. The turn out was great and was definitely one of the strongest shows seen yet.

Next stop-----> Toronto.

My California trip only lasted five days but during those five days it was filled with galleries, toy shops, museums and the beach! I dropped by 1988, CoproNason, Nucleus, Think Space, LeBasse: Projects, Japanese American National Museum to see 300 hand painted kokeshi dolls from artists around the world.

I can't wait to book another flight back. Maybe this time, I'll stay longer.

I've recently graduated from Sheridan college with a BAA in illustration and I'm ready to pump out new works! Currently I'm working for a social network as a graphic designer in creating web designs, motion graphics, as well as designs for the company. On top of things, I've also been freelancing. It's been a really great start for my career and I know with hard work and dedication it'll only get better.

Subtext is proud to present a group exhibition of emerging artists, guest curated by Beau Basse. The work is slowly coming in, and it’s shaping up to be a really great showcase of talent. The Kids Are Alright is a five city showcase tour of 25 young artists that have either recently graduated or are still attending art school. The series was designed to give these artists an opportunity to develop their talents while receiving direction and feedback from several different galleries throughout the country. The Tour is curated by Beau Basse, owner of LeBasse Projects in Los Angeles. His goal in producing the Tour is to create a platform for young artists to gain experience working with galleries in order to properly prepare them for future success as professional artists. Mark your calendars for this epic showing of fresh talent.

Also, there will be live music in the courtyard at 9pm. Thanks to our friends at Sezio, Subtext is proud to feature Better Class of Flying Man. It’s gonna be a nice Spring night, so don’t miss out.

Do you know what's in your meat?

It's not known to a lot of people but even diseased animals will be thrown into slaughter for consumption. Last year there was America's biggest beef (at one factory farm) recall due to sick animals being sold but who knows how many other companies are doing this as well.

We consume 15 billion animals a year (statistics as of 2007, our consumption has probably raised since). If there were no factory farms and mass production all animals would not exist because of us. We do not need to eat meat everyday.

Plastics that have been littered or thrown out will eventually float into the ocean. Black-footed Albatross are ocean surface feeders and depend on finding food on the oceans surface for themselves. The birds often mistake floating plastic debris as food and will ingest high quantities of plastic bottle caps, plastic fragments, discarded cigarette lighters, and plastic toys. The plastic will still remain within the decayed ribcage even after the birds death.

Set an example to others and encourage them to help. Every little bit helps. Pollution in the water will eventually lead back to us.

Rachelle showed me these videos and I think we all need to be more aware of what actually goes on in our world. Please watch the videos.

PROCESS: sketching and no painting?

Final colour was added in photoshop. Originally it was orange but I found that the blue really made it pop more. Overall the piece took me the span of three to four days to complete from beginning to end. TADAAAA. done.

I then taped the piece onto my drafting table.

The paper that I used was BFK rives but I found it smudged easily or maybe I'm just messy.

The beginning stages: After sketching on the computer, I print out the image ( half the size of the original snowboard) and I transfer the drawing onto paper. At first I was planning to paint it but as I sketched out the koi fish I really liked the flow, texture and the mark that graphite made.

I enjoy sketching on the computer when it comes to designs that need to be fit into a template. Also, I draw wayyy to big and I always end up needing a thousand sheets of paper. Thats why I feel as though there is less of a commitment when it comes to editing on the computer. The transform and lasso tool are my best friends.

It's been a while since I've last posted. School has been busy, along with freelancing and my new obsession with the book Twilight which premieres November 21st for all those Twilight lovers. But for now I'm going to focus my attention more on painting and less on reading. I hope to be posting more often within the next few weeks.

I thought about painting a thousand paper cranes until I realized how ridiculously long that would take. Maybe next time. Here's my latest piece.

The good, the bad, the evil and the wounded. Without one the other does not exist. In order for there to be good, evil will always co-exist. It's been about 3 years now since I've work on a larger scale. To be honest, I'm not too sure why it's taken me that long to realize what I love doing the most is painting. It's an amazing feeling to take a gigantic blob of paint and then to splatter it onto paper. No more digital painting from me for a while. Hopefully my next piece will be just as GRAND.

Dreamworks Studio

Ronald Kurniawan, who is an amazing artist, was kind enough to give us a tour of Dreamworks Studio. The artists there are INSANELY talented! There is so much time and patience that is put into each movie. The Studio looked like a resort from the outside with ponds, miniature water falls and a buffet for lunch and breakfast. But the moment you stepped into the building it was dead silence, everyone was working away to meet deadlines. Martha and I got to see all the new movies in production that will be released in 2010 and on. Overall it was a great experience to see the studio life. I'm not sure it's for me but I'd love to one day do some freelancing for them. For now, It's back to the drawing board and long sleepless nights.

Princess peach looks like she's enjoying herself. I haven't worked in paint in a while but I'm slowly getting back into things. Los Angeles has been great, I've been meeting many great artists and have been learning lots.

Martha and I have been interning for James Jean and Project Gallery for the last month and a half. It's been an incredible experience as well as eye opening. I will post pictures later on in the summer.

The next pieces will hopefully be done in oil paints for the up and coming fresh faces show by Project Gallery. Many thanks to Beau Basse for featuring Martha Chan, Nimit Malavia, Yuta Onoda and I in the Septemeber 6th show.

It was much more forgiving then traditional mediums but I simply miss the look and effect of traditional paint. There is a natural flow that cannot be captured on the computer.

What's going on? real paint? that's right...you'll be seeing more of this. Im in process of recreating the big fish piece with mixmedia. I painted the background and poured bleach on the canvas. It looks cool but i think I'm slowing dieing from the fumes. I'll post the final piece when it is completed.

I decided to buy a Chinese fighting fish (random decision I'd say), mainly because they are extremely easy to take care of and they're pretty. After buying the fish I was then inspired to paint, so the painting above is the result. The poor thing doesn't have any vegetation but at least it's stuck in an awesome glass tank,which was a flower vase i think, that I found at Winners. Anyways, I should probably buy it some some sea weed and maybe some friends.

Supposedly they live in rice fields, I didn't know such pretty critters lived in.....rice.

This is an illustration done for my interpretive class. The company name that i chose for it was Jet Fuel. the "client" is a coffee franchise ar Pearson airport Terminal 1. the three themes that were given to us were 1) Jet Fuel, 2) Red Eye and 3) Sky Blue. I ended up picking Jet Fuel as my agency.

I will post the illustration with the coffee cup later on, once i upload the images. Hope you guys like it.
